YOUR PROJECTS/
Estimate Time & Cost

To get a precise estimation for a still image project, use our RANCHecker application and its integrated benchmark and estimation tools. If you cannot use RANCHecker, use the manual method below. For animations, use the estimator at the bottom of the page.

First, we must calculate the Sampling Level gain you can expect from the RANCH, compared to your system. Download the 8BALL scene and run it on your computer with default parameters (5 mn, 1024x576). When it's done, enter the SL reached in the 'Your SL' field below and click on 'Compute'. The SL difference between your system and the RANCH (DELTA) will be displayed.

You can apply this DELTA to all your projects. e.g., if your system takes one hour to reach a given SL, you know that in the same amount of time, the RANCH will reach this SL + DELTA.

Your SL (8ball, 5 mn) :
DELTA = :  (+- 0.2)

Now that you have DELTA, you can use the cost estimator.

How to use the cost estimator below:

In the first field, enter an estimation of the preparation time of your project (the time needed for various calculations before the actual rendering, such as the voxelization). Two minutes are added to account for the distribution of the scene on the RANCH Runner nodes.
In the second field, enter the render time limit you desire, in minutes.

In the third field, enter the size of the MXI file generated by your project, in megabytes (MB). If you do not know it, launch a SL=1 render at full resolution, check the size of the MXI and enter it in the field. Gathering and merging MXIs from all the RANCH Runner nodes takes around 5 minutes with 1 GB MXIs (~200 MB/min). The MXI size limit accepted by the RANCH is around 5 GB. Please be cautious with Multilight renders: they can generate huge MXI files.

If the render time of your project is >= 60 mn, the MXI merging time is free of charge.
