Reducing the environmental impact of HPC through immersion
A benchmark French render farm since 2006, Ranch Computing specialises in producing computer-generated images for the architecture, animation, and visual effects markets.
Committed to digital sovereignty, eco-responsibility and technological performance, Ranch Computing has obtained TPN Gold Shield status — a guarantee of compliance and security for international studios.
In response to increasing customer demand, Ranch Computing has strategically chosen to integrate AMD EPYC™ processors into its infrastructure and adopt a low-impact approach with immersion cooling.
Key milestones in the AMD partnership:
-2020: first virtualisation tests on AMD EPYC processors
– 2022: Production start-up with 3rd Gen AMD EPYC, followed by 4th Gen AMD EPYC and 5th Gen AMD EPYC in subsequent years
– 2023: launch of the first immersed servers, focusing on performance and energy efficiency.
Immersion vs Air Cooling: the figures speak for themselves
Configuration | Cooling | Max T°C | Max Cons. per thread | Min T°C | Min Cons. per thread |
5th & 4th Gen AMD EPYC Turin / Bergamo 1U-2Nodes (immersion) | Liquid | 90°C/65°C | 1.41W/2.12 W | 46°C/46°C | 0.32W/0.48W |
4th Gen AMD EPYC Bergamo 2U-1Node (air) | Air cooling | 102°C | 4.2 W | 62°C | 1.44W |
4th Gen AMD EPYC Bergamo 2U-4Nodes (air) | Air cooling | 94°C | 3.49 W | 52°C | 1.05W |
What the analysis shows:
The average temperature is reduced to -20°C with immersion.
Consumption per thread is divided by two to four in Turin immersion compared with air-cooled Bergamo, depending on actual processor utilisation.
There is greater stability, a longer hardware life, and reduced air-conditioning requirements.
Tangible benefits for sustainable infrastructure.
Server densification: more power in less space.
Reduced carbon footprint: immersion enables us to reduce peak electrical requirements by 40%. Our servers are also powered by 100% renewable energy.
Our infrastructure is quieter, more compact and more efficient.
Testimonial:
‘Immersion isn’t just a technical evolution; it’s a tangible solution to energy issues. With AMD, we’re creating a more environmentally friendly, compact and intelligent infrastructure.’
