Why choose 3ds Max? Pros, cons and alternatives (Blender, Maya)

Pourquoi choisir 3ds Max ?

Choose 3ds Max if you work on Windows, your activity is modeling, visualization (architecture, product) or game asset creation, and your studio already relies on its plugin ecosystem. Look at Maya for character animation, Blender if budget comes first, and Houdini for large-scale simulation. For a general introduction to the software, read what 3ds Max is used for.

Modeling and sculpting

3ds Max builds models as objects with a modifier stack: each step stays editable, so you can change an early decision without rebuilding the model. It is very comfortable for hard-surface, architectural and product modeling. Blender offers polygon modeling too, and adds a sculpting mode and procedural tools, which makes it more flexible for organic shapes and mixed workflows.

Materials and rendering

Both use node-based, physically based materials. The difference is the renderer: 3ds Max ships with Arnold and works with the industry’s main third-party engines (see our render engine comparison), while Blender includes Cycles and the real-time EEVEE. If your clients or studio expect a V-Ray or Corona pipeline, that is a strong reason to stay with 3ds Max.

Plugins, scripting and customization

3ds Max has a very large plugin ecosystem (see our selection of the best plugins for 3ds Max): Forest Pack and RailClone for scattering and parametric structures, V-Ray and Corona for rendering. MAXScript and Python let you build custom tools. Blender is extensible through Python and a large community of add-ons, many of them free.

Platform and cost

Blender runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and costs nothing. 3ds Max runs on Windows only and is sold by subscription, usually with a renderer on top for visualization work. For a freelancer on a small budget, this gap is often decisive. The detail of plans, Flex, Indie and student options is in our 3ds Max pricing guide.

Industry use and community

3ds Max is a staple in architectural visualization and game development, where many studios built their pipelines around it. Blender is popular with independent artists, small studios and animation projects. Both have large communities and plenty of learning resources: Blender’s is open and very active, while 3ds Max benefits from three decades of tutorials and official Autodesk documentation.

Blender teaches the same fundamentals and costs nothing. 3ds Max becomes relevant when your future employer, studio or clients use it, or when you depend on plugins built for 3ds Max.

The strengths of 3ds Max

  • Non-destructive modeling: the modifier stack keeps every construction step.
  • Plugin support that follows Autodesk’s schedule: iToo Software announced support for 3ds Max 2027 on the day it was released, a version we cover in the new features in 3ds Max 2027.
  • Built-in rendering: the Arnold renderer comes with the software, and the choice of third-party engines is wide.
  • Simple data exchange: support for OpenUSD and glTF, and import of CAD files.
  • Maturity: more than thirty years of existence, with a large community and plenty of learning resources.

The limits to know about

  • Windows only: no macOS or Linux version.
  • A paid subscription: the cost is recurring and high for a freelancer.
  • A dense interface: users and reviewers report a demanding learning curve, with many options and commands.
  • Character animation: Maya remains the usual reference in film and TV pipelines.
  • Procedural simulation: Houdini is better suited to fluids, destruction and crowds.
  • Render time: long animations can tie up a workstation for days, which is where a 3ds Max render farm helps.

Frequently asked questions

Do people still use 3ds Max?

Yes. Autodesk still ships a major version every year (3ds Max 2027 came out in March 2026), and studios in visualization and game development keep it in their pipelines, largely because of its plugins.

Is 3ds Max better than Blender?

Neither is better in every case. Blender is free and versatile. 3ds Max is often the standard in architectural visualization and game studios built around its plugins and renderers.

Do architects use Blender or 3ds Max?

Both are used. 3ds Max is long established in architectural visualization studios, especially with V-Ray or Corona. Blender is growing, particularly among independent artists and small practices.

3ds Max or Maya?

Both are Autodesk products. 3ds Max leans toward modeling and visualization, Maya toward character animation and rigging, although each can do the other’s job.
